On June 1, the Council of Markham approved a request submitted by Hakka Canadian Association to proclaim the week of June 24-30, 2022 to be the Hakka Heritage Week. The weeks falls on the date of the 31st World Hakka Conference, the first-ever global Hakka event being held in Canada.
The World Hakka Conference will be held from June 24 to 26 in Markham, at Hilton Toronto/Markham Suite and Conference Centre & Spa, 8500 Warden Ave., Markham.
The Council agreed that the request from HCA was consistent with the City of Markham’s proclamation policy and approved the request.
31st World Hakka Conference is organized by the Hakka Canadian Association and is supported by the City of Markham.
It is the first Hakka Heritage proclamation by any government of Canada. The Markham Hakka Heritage Week proclamation is effective for five years. The last week of June in the next four years will be recognized as Hakka Heritage Week in the City of Markham.
